Sevilla winger Vitolo has revealed he came close to joining Atletico Madrid over summer but opted to stay and renew his deal in Andalucia.

The 27-year-old has starred under Jorge Sampaoli this season with three goals across 25 appearances and has cemented his place in the Spanish national team.

“It is true that I was close to joining Atletico but the move never came close because I told the president (Jose Castro) I wanted to renew,” he told Cadena Cope.

“What happens in the future? Who knows, but I’m very happy here and hope to continue to help push the team towards titles – I'm proud at Sevilla.”

Speaking after Sevilla recorded their first victory in three league outings with a win at old club Las Palmas, Vitolo spoke of his delight at a hard-fought three pints.

“I was really happy with the win, it’s never an easy place to go so it is a massive three points for us,” he added.

“I never won anything in Las Palmas and didn’t even play in the top division, so it shows how much they’ve improved but I’m delighted we got back to winning again.”
