Sevilla close in on Rosario’s Montoya

Sevilla are closing in on their third January signing in the form of Argentine midfielder Walter Montoya from Rosario Central, according to reports in Spain.

ABC de Sevilla report the Europa League winners are close to completing a €5m deal for the 23-year-old, despite interest from Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate, while Italian duo Genoa and Sassuolo were also reportedly interested in a move.

Since making his debut for Rosario in 2014, the right-sided midfielder has made 67 appearances for the club and scored seven times, and has decided on a move to Andalusia due to 'better payment' and 'better guarantees' than others who maintained interest, while his rumoured transfer to River Plate collapsed due to a fractious relationship between the pair.

Any deal will only go through if Sevilla free up a 'non EU' place in their squad, with rumoured departures for midfield duo Ganso and Hiyoshi Kiyotake, both only signed this summer. If not, Montoya's move will be finalised in summer.
