‘I have made a mistake’ – Parejo

Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo has issued an apology after footage of him appearing drunk and holding a shisha pipe in a nightclub emerged online.

The 27-year-old did not have a game at the weekend due to Valencia’s scheduled clash with Real Madrid being delayed due to their opponents participation in the Club World Cup, but the video has drawn much criticism from fans of the club.

"We are all aware of the situation of the club, but it was my day off and we are all human,” said Parejo.

"It was a day off and we had no game at the weekend, although I cannot justify it.

"I have apologised to the president, to the club, to the coach (Cesare Prandelli), with whom I've spoken personally, to the fans and to my teammates.

"I made a mistake and it will not happen again – but I haven't killed anyone."

The former Real Madrid was left out of Valencia’s squad for for Wednesday's Copa del Rey game against Leganes, with coach Cesare Prandelli admitting action might need to be taken.

"After the game, we will decide with the club what action to take," he said.

"Parejo apologised to me. A player can be judged and criticised, but men always have to maintain a certain dignity."

Meanwhile, a statement released by the Association of Supporters of Valencia read: "Parejo earns €2.5 million per season — he is the second highest earner in the team and needs to give an example of commitment. We only ask for respect."
