Sporting’s Gelson going nowhere

Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins will not be leaving the club in January despite interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, his agent has confirmed.

Marca had recently reported Madrid as taking a firm interest in the 21-year-old after he impressed when the two sides met in this season's Champions League, while Barca's international director of sports, Ariedo Braida, also confirmed in October that his club were scouting Martins.

"He is a Sporting player and will continue to be in January,” the player's agent Ulisses Santos is quoted as saying by AS.

“There are no offers. With all certainty, he will remain. He has a long-term contract and will not leave.

“We are negotiating (for a new Sporting contract) and we will see what happens. The atmosphere is good and I'm certain we will reach a good understanding."

Martins is under contract with Sporting until June 2021 and has a release clause of €60m, and has netted six times across 40 appearances for the Lisbon club.
