Escriba: We couldn’t recover

Villarreal coach Fran Escriba says his side were unable to recover from a slow start as they slumped to defeat against Alaves on Sunday.

Early strikes from Ibai Gomez and Victor Camarasa gave the newly-promoted a two-goal lead which they held for the remainder of the match to record an impressive victory at El Madrigal.

“I’ve seen some people try to blame fatigue (from playing in the Europa League on Thursday night) but that does not apply as we were poor early in the game, not late on,” Escriba stated.

“We were out of the game from the start and not able to recover – it was poor marking from us and we should have done much better for the goals.

“We did not push Deyverson or Camarasa back and they were given too much time on the ball in dangerous positions and were punished.”

Villarreal dropped two places to sixth while Alaves are now up to 13th in the standings.
