‘Defeat won’t weaken Villarreal’

Fran Escriba brushed off fears Villarreal were “hurt” by Sunday’s late 2-1 defeat to Eibar – their first such La Liga result of the season.

“The game was even and could’ve ended in a draw,” the Coach noted after the match.

“It was a very even match, which we always controlled, the draw came from a set-piece and 2-1 from a counter after an attack that looked dangerous on our part.

“The result is always fair, but neither team were superior, although small details won the game for Eibar. The two teams played well, so we should congratulate them.

“Losing doesn’t have to hurt. I don’t like drawing positives when we win and negatives when we lose. It won’t be our last defeat in the League, although I wish it was.

“We played at a difficult stadium, against a team that press in Eibar. We knew that if we didn’t score the second goal, we were going to suffer, so we had to find the second goal.

“We saw Eibar to be a good team, they’re not the team that reached La Liga in 2014. Their objective isn’t only staying up but establishing themselves.

“They’ve strengthened very well year after year and they’ll stay up easily. They have a great Coach and play good football.”
