‘I wish I’d scored it for RM, not Barca…’

Former Brazil superstar Ronaldo has expressed his regret that his famous solo goal against SD Compostela was for Barcelona rather than Real Madrid.

The then 20-year-old picked up the ball in his own half before dribbling past a host of Compostela challenges before scoring what he would later describe as his ‘most beautiful goal’.

"It was a lovely goal, but the truth is I would have preferred to score it with Real Madrid," he told Movistar +.

"The only pity is that I was not at Madrid when I scored it."

Barcelona won the October 1996 encounter 5-1 and Ronaldo, who had celebrated his 20th birthday only a month earlier, picked the ball up in his own and powered through five challenges with 14 touches in 12 seconds before the ball finally ended up in the back of the net.

"It was the most beautiful and most difficult," Ronaldo explained after his retirement, when asked to speak of a select number of his greatest moments'.

A ‘genius' was that following day's headline in Marca, expressing the sentiment of the entire nation at the moment they had just witnessed.
