Simeone rues wasted chances

Diego Simeone rued Atletico Madrid’s wasted chances after their dramatic 1-1 draw with Alaves in Sunday’s La Liga opener.

Kevin Gameiro thought he had secured all three points for Atleti with a goal at the beginning of injury time, yet his side would end the match with only the one as Manu Garcia equalised just seconds before the final whistle was blown.

“[On Gameiro, it was a] good performance, the team generally played with good intensity to win the game,” the Coach said after the game.

“We lacked composure in our finishing, but our attitude was good and we’ve had to settle for the very little on offer.

“We went from more to less, but I saw the team to be strong, with enthusiasm and a lot of energy.

“We tried by all means to win the game, but the bad taste [of not winning] sticks with me.

“[Alaves] tried to defend for their lives. They suffered the injury to [Zouhair] Feddal and their great goalkeeper played great.

“That’s football and you win by scoring goals, but we couldn’t take our chances. This point isn’t enough.

“[Fernando] Torres is always important and well, but the starting striker is [Antoine] Griezmann.”
