Marcelino: Thank you, Villarreal!

Marcelino has written an open letter to Villarreal, thanking everyone connected to the club – including the players – for their contributions prior to his departure.

Marcelino stunned Spanish football when he parted company with Villarreal on Wednesday, less than a week before their Champions League playoff first leg against Monaco, amidst reports he fell out with senior players over his decision to strip Mateo Musacchio of his third-captain status.

“Dear friends,” the Coach began.

“As you all know, on Wednesday I ceased to belong to Villarreal along with my assistants Ruben Uria and Ismael Fernandez, and I don’t want to close this beautiful and important stage in my career as a Coach without saying goodbye to all those who have accompanied us during these unforgettable years.

“Firstly, we want to thank President Fernando Roig, CEO Fernando Roig Negueroles, Vice-President Jose Manuel Llaneza and other board members for trusting us to lead this great club.

“[Secondly], a special thanks to all players who we’ve managed during these three-and-a-half seasons. Without them, it would’ve been impossible to achieve our successes.

“We extend our thanks to our colleagues in the coaching staff and each and every one of Villarreal’s employees, whose dedication and daily efforts have contributed to our achievements.

“This cycle is finished and we’re proud of all the sporting goals we’ve achieved, having started this adventure in the Segunda Division and ending it at the gates of playing in Europe’s top competition.

“Finally, we can’t forget the love, respect and affection since the day we arrived that you [fans] have always showed towards us, and with your unconditional support, you made us feel right at home.

“Without you, none of this would’ve been possible. El Madrigal will always be a special place for us.

“A hug. Endavant. Marcelino G. Toral”
