Milan are ready to tempt Mateo Kovacic into returning to Serie A, according Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Croatia international found playing opportunities hard to come by at Real Madrid last season, starting just eight La Liga games, and the Rossoneri are ready to entice him back in their attempts to bring more creative midfield players to the club.

The former Inter man joined Los Blancos in August 2015 for a reported €35m but Milan will reportedly try to broker a loan arrangement with an obligation to purchase the 22-year-old outright.

Kovacic started Madrid’s 3-2 European Super Cup success over Sevilla on Tuesday night, being replaced by James Rodriguez on 73 minutes, and has expressed a desire to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, the emergence of Marcos Asensio during pre-season has cast further doubt on the futures of a number of Madrid midfielders, most notably Kovacic, James and Isco.
