Cerezo: No more Atletico signings

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo rules out any more transfers and discusses Diego Costa.

Los Colchoneros have been La Liga’s biggest spenders of the summer and Cerezo has told Marca it’s been money well spent, all with the say-so of Diego Simeone.

“It’s a great team, a super team. I think it’s our best in many years. We’ve got great players, great professionals and great people. Young people, with enthusiasm and the desire to win. This is the cream,” the supremo said.

“We’ve signed what we needed, with Cholo’s agreement. We didn’t spend more than we have. The signings have ended because the LFP will not allow us to make any more, there won’t be any more.

“Kevin Gameiro is the kind of player we like to sign. He was our principle, our only objective. We’re delighted he’s at Atletico. He’s a great professional, a professional scorer, decisive in the trophies he won with Sevilla. He scored 30 goals last season. The move was easy, he wanted to come and we’re delighted he’s here. I’m sure he’ll succeed.

“Costa? There wasn’t a soap opera. He has a contract with Chelsea and he’s in Antonio Conte’s team. Chelsea are our friends, and a great friend and Diego Costa is an Atletico but he’s Chelsea, where I’m sure he’ll triumph. We love Diego for what he has given us and he knows where his home is.”

Cerezo moved on to discuss Nico Gaitan, bought from Benfica, and Luciano Vietto, loaned to Sevilla, among other players.

“Gaitan wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t a request of Simeone. The opinion of the Coach is always important here. Gaitan was wanted by half of Europe. Last season he was the best player to visit Vicente Calderon. I’m sure he’ll succeed,” Cerezo continued.

“Vietto’s loan is so he can play. He’ll be back. I’m sure he’ll be one of the protagonists of La Liga.

“Fernando Torres? Of course he’ll continue, he’s Atletico to the core. He’ll continue as long as he wants. Atletico want him and he wants Atletico, we’re all enthusiastic and happy. Jan Oblak? The best goalkeeper in the world. There’s no better goalkeeper.”
