Poyet first option for Betis?

Former Sunderland and AEK Athens Coach Gus Poyet is touted as Real Betis’ preferred option to take over as Coach next season.

Juan Merino currently sits on the bench after stepping in for Pepe Mel part-way through the campaign and AS reports that despite Betis publically insisting the club’s focus is on avoiding relegation in the final two games, steps are being taken to firm up the trainer for 2016-17.

Poyet has emerged as the candidate favoured by new sporting director Miguel Torrecilla, hired from Celta Vigo to replace Eduardo Macia, and Poyet has confirmed he’d be interested in working in Spain having played in La Liga with Real Zaragoza.

The Uruguayan is however linked with Nottingham Forest, in England’s Championship, and has admitted he would be interested in working in the second tier, but would give a Primera side priority.

Torrecilla has also said no signings will be made this summer without the Coach’s agreement, so finalising who that Coach is has been made a priority at Benito Villamarin.
