Perez: Madrid must give maximum

Florentino Perez has urged Real Madrid’s players and fans “to give our maximum” for the rest of the season as the club challenge on two fronts.

Madrid take a goalless draw into the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Manchester City and sit just a point behind leaders Barcelona in La Liga, and Perez issued a rallying cry to his fellow Blancos at the presentation of the Corazon Classic Match, which will be played on June 5.

“It won’t be easy [against City], we’re facing great opponents and we must give our maximum on the pitch and in the stands,” the President vowed on Friday.

“[On Johan Cruyff], he was an eternal and legendary figure.”

The Corazon Classic will pit legends of Madrid and Ajax against one another, with Zinedine Zidane, Fernando Hierro, Roberto Carlos, Guti and Santiago Solari among others signed up for Los Merengues, while the Dutch club’s ranks will consist of Clarence Seedorf, Edwin van der Sar, Marc Overmars, Ronald de Boer and the like.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Van der Sar added: “It’s a great honour for Ajax to come here.

“I played [at the Santiago Bernabeu] four years ago with Manchester United. I remember there were plenty of fans in the stands. It’s fantastic charity work from Real Madrid.”
