Hecking: Congratulations Madrid

Wolfsburg Coach Dieter Hecking didn’t begrudge Real Madrid their Champions League semi-final place. ‘They deserved to go through.’

The Bundesliga side held a 2-0 advantage from the first leg but were blown away by Los Blancos and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored an unanswered hat-trick.

“They deserved to go through, they won fairly. We didn’t get to play as we wanted. We weren’t so bad but we didn’t understand what had to be done, we gave the ball away and we knew that was dangerous,” Hecking said, AS reports.

“We have been unlucky because the last two goals were set-pieces and we should have defended better. We needed a goal to go through to the semis. Congratulations to Madrid, because they deserved to go through.”

Hecking was asked where the game was, in his opinion, won and lost, and also commended his side on reaching the last eight.

“We failed in the one-on-ones, we lacked strength there. Madrid have very good forwards,” he noted.

“We have to continue working after a fantastic season in the Champions League. We’ve played to our possibilities.

“We should be proud. We deserved to reach the quarter-final. We’re troubled in the Bundesliga but we’ve grown in the Champions League. We lacked a little today but we leave Madrid with pride.”
