Johan Cruyff passes away

Legendary former Barcelona player and Coach Johan Cruyff has passed away from cancer at the age of 68.

Cruyff, who played for Barca between 1973 and 1978, and returned to Camp Nou as trainer in 1988 for a successful six-year spell, was diagnosed with the illness in October 2015.

He began his playing career at Ajax in the 1964-65 season and also turned out for Levante after playing in the United States.

As Barca Coach he won La Liga four times, the club’s first European Cup in 1992, and a number of other trophies, remaining an emblem of the club.

He is credited with huge influence on the style of Barca, Pep Guardiola having played under Cruyff in the European Cup-winning team, and was credited as the forefather of the Barca academy, La Masia. Cruyff also coached the Catalan national team in 2009.

A three-time Ballon d’Or winner and World Cup runner-up with the Netherlands in 1974, it is reported Cruyff passed away at home in Barcelona.
