‘Cholo trusts Atletico cantera’

Lucas Hernandez has thanked Diego Simeone for having faith in him and other representatives of the Atletico Madrid cantera.

Defender Lucas made his first Atletico start in the League in the win over Valencia and, having had the chance to leave Vicente Calderon in the winter, is sure he made the right decision.

“Between the club and myself, we decided it was best [to stay]. I want to thank the Coach for giving me 90 minutes. I keep on fighting and I stayed here to play,” he said, AS reports, having moved to centre-back to fill in for Diego Godin.

“I’m pleased the club and the Coach trusted me. Replacing Godin isn’t easy but it made me very happy to play 90 minutes.

“I’m happy because the club and the Coach trust the cantera. It’s appreciated and shows that if you fight and if you have humility, you can achieve things.”

Atletico are chasing Barcelona at the top of the table and Lucas insisted his team isn’t far off the Catalans.

“Barca are at a stratospheric level but we’re also good. We continue to fight,” he added.
