Ancelotti: Madrid must keep Zidane

Carlo Ancelotti has urged Real Madrid to keep on Zinedine Zidane as Coach in the summer, “whatever the final outcome of the season may be”.

Zidane replaced Rafa Benitez at the beginning of January and has since guided Madrid to six wins and two draws in eight games, with the side still in contention for La Liga and the Champions League, although they lag nine points behind Barcelona domestically.

Nonetheless, Ancelotti – who was assisted by the Frenchman when he was Coach between 2013 and 2015 – told Sina Sports: “After the draw [at Malaga], Real Madrid’s position in the title race has become more unfavourable.

“Still, as Zidane said, Real Madrid will never give up, but in this case, it’s clear that they need to prioritise one of La Liga and the Champions League.

“In the [Champions League], they’re doing fine. They just beat Roma and are a strong bet for the trophy.

“The Champions League isn’t easy. It requires a lot of effort, a high degree of focus, minimal errors and a little luck.

“Whatever the final outcome of the season may be, I think Zidane should continue as Coach next season.”
