Simeone: Goals give Torres confidence

Diego Simeone believes Fernando Torres will go from strength to strength after another goal in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win at Getafe on Sunday.

Torres netted the only goal of the game at Coliseum Alfonso Perez after just two minutes – his second in as many games – and Simeone is optimistic the No 9 can continue his rich vein of form.

“Every time we travel to Getafe, we find it difficult. We’re always in store for a tough match,” the Coach said after the game.

“[Geta] worked very well with the ball but didn’t have scoring chances.

“We started strongly until Gabi’s knock. Until then, the team did well, but we began to lose consistency and the speed of our start.

“In the second half, except for the last few minutes, we did little in the way of attacking.

“It’s also very positive to know we can suffer. The team have a way of interpreting each game situation very well.

“It’s true that we play with the risk of the outcome, but we put in huge defensive work to support the goal which won us the game.

“[Torres] started the game very well. It was a very quick move [for his goal] and he showed good definition [in his finish].

“Goals always reinforce forwards and I wish Fernando well.

“We’re still on the right track. We’re at a very competitive point [in the season], especially as we have Villarreal on Sunday. We’ll face a team who are doing very well.

“Barcelona don’t usually collapse, and I predict, judging by logic, that they’ll drop only a few points before the end of the season.

“Gabi took a fair blow but handled the rest of the game very well, with a lot of pain and strength.

“[On Yannick Carrasco’s sprained ankle], I expect it to be as mild as possible.”
