Bruno Soriano believes Villarreal were Denis Cheryshev’s first choice before he ultimately joined Valencia on transfer-deadline day last month.
Cheryshev was heavily linked with a January return to Villarreal after a productive 2014-15 campaign at El Madrigal, but the Real Madrid winger was eventually loaned to Valencia until the end of the season, and Soriano is adamant his former teammate did not get the move he wanted.
“It didn’t surprise me that Cheryshev joined Valencia,” the midfielder told AS.
“The President already said he made an effort to bring him back, and I think he wanted to end the season with us.
“He’s defending other colours now. I don’t know if Madrid let him go because of what happened in the cup or other things, but the reality is that Cheryshev isn’t here and there’s no getting around it.
“Those of us here will try to finish the season well because we want to achieve important things.
“What I ask is for the fans to support us more than ever at home because [their support] is crucial.”
