Valencia waiting on Cheryshev all-clear

Gary Neville confirms Valencia are waiting to hear in Denis Cheryshev can play in the Copa del Rey against Barcelona.

Cheryshev moved to Los Che on transfer deadline day, joining on a season’s loan from Real Madrid and one of his few appearances for Los Blancos came in the Cup when he was supposed to be banned, leading to the club being expelled from the competition.

Neville was asked if he would put money on Cheryshev playing at Camp Nou, with the reporter phrasing the question that was as ‘the English like to bet.’

“Just degrade an entire nation. All the English like a beer and bet according to you,” he replied, AS reports, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

“I don’t care about the beer. The betting…yes. We’re waiting for the [Spanish Football Federation] and we don’t want any mistakes. We have to wait. It’s a difficult decision.”

Neville explained how Valencia ended up with Cheryshev and Guilherme Siqueira late in the window when he had appeared sure they’d do no business, criticising the very notion of a mid-season market.

“I said it was a useless market but yes, you can do business. I think we’ve got two good pieces of business,” he clarified.

“Two weeks ago I didn’t think either was coming. [Sporting director] Jesus Garcia Pitarch’s work has been impeccable.

“I didn’t lie. Now you seem to be disappointed because there are signings when you’ve been asking me to make signings.”
