arcelona’s Lionel Messi won’t be included in Argentina’s squad for the 2016 Olympic Games but will be named in the Copa America party.
Argentina Coach Gerardo Martino, formerly of Barca, confirmed in an interview with Radio La Red that Messi will be part of the Centenary Copa America, to be held in the United States this summer, but will miss the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
“Messi won’t go to the Olympics because there will be a lot of competition with the main team,” Martino said, Marca reports.
Marca adds that Argentina’s three over-age players for the Olympics will be used in defence, while Messi will be saved for the Copa America and the World Cup qualifiers played before the end of the season and through the beginning of next season.
