Unai Emery hailed the return of Daniel Carrico as an important factor in Sevilla’s 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
The Portuguese centre-back made his first appearance since the second week of the season as Kevin Gameiro’s brace leapfrogged Los Nervionenses over their opponents in the table, and his Coach was quick to promote his “quality, attitude and mental capacity”.
“It was an important win against strong opponents,” he said after the game.
“We were two teams who started [the season] slowly but are now nearer to the top.
“We played with intensity, aptitude and pressure against the difficulty which Athletic proposed.
“We must now correct and learn from everything we did [in the first half of the season].
“We are creating chances and just need patience when putting them away.
“In addition to his qualities, [Carrico] has the right attitude and mental capacity.
“He has a competitive gene, covers every last blade of grass and transmits this [to the rest of the team].
“Sevilla also have his competitive gene, and anyone who doesn’t have it will stay off the team.”
