‘Chelsea interest in Jackson is no lie’

The agent of Jackson Martinez has claimed that Chelsea’s interest in the Atletico Madrid striker is not a “lie”.

A mix of injuries and poor form has made for a tough start to the Colombian’s career at the Vicente Calderon, amid reports Los Colcheneros were ready to push through a swap deal involving him and former hero Diego Costa.

“Jackson wants to succeed at Atletico, but it’s the club who will decide his future,” Henrique Pompei told AS.

“I can’t say [Chelsea’s interest] is a lie, this is football and no-one knows what will happen in the future.

“What I mean is that he’s not one to leave unless it’s through the front door.

“He made a choice, is very happy in Madrid and loves the club.

“Obviously he’d have preferred to have got off to a different start on a personal level, but he’s happy for the team because things are going well.

“Jackson is grateful to Atletico, [Vice-President Miguel Angel] Gil Marin and [President Enrique] Cerezo because they made a big economic effort to sign him.

“With calmness and continuity, he will succeed and return to the pitch.

“He’s had to adapt to a new style of football and 1,000 other things, and then came the injury.”
