‘Jese refused to play left-back’

Jese reportedly refused to play at left-back against Villarreal despite Rafa Benitez sending him on in that position when Marcelo went off.

AS recalls Marcelo asked to be replaced in the final minutes of the defeat at El Madrigal and Jese was sent on, playing the last five minutes of the match when added time is taken into account.

But Jese was told by Benitez to play on the left of the defence and refused, with Gareth Bale instead filling in, and the Wales international was reportedly unhappy at doing so.

Left-back is the position in which Bale first caught the eye, when a Southampton player, but he moved into midfield and then attack while at Tottenham Hotspur.

AS points out that in the game that followed Jese’s show of disobedience, Sunday’s rout of Rayo Vallecano, the cantera product was left in the stands and Madrid went without a forward on the bench, the suggestion being that Jese was being punished for disobeying Benitez.
