Atletico Madrid have reportedly agreed to sign Augusto Fernandez from Celta Vigo, and the midfielder could train with his new club as early as next week.

According to Cadena SER, Atleti are confident of the 29-year-old’s arrival after reaching an agreement with the Galicians for 50 percent of his economic rights and believing separate negotiations with Velez Sarsfield – who own the other half – to be a formality.

Los Colchoneros are then hoping Fernandez can begin training on December 28, although he would not be able to play any official games until January.

Fernandez is understood to have signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Atleti, worth €1.8m per season, and will attempt to fill the void left by Tiago Mendes, who is expected to be out until April with a fractured tibia.
