‘Messi’s fitness? Wait and see’

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez could offer little insight into Lionel Messi’s condition as the forward suffers from renal colic.

Renal colic, a condition often associated with kidney stones, kept Messi out of Barca’s Club World Cup semi-final, a tie won 3-0 through a Luis Suarez hat-trick.

“Leo isn’t well. He’s got renal colic, and we all know how painful that can be,” Robert said, before the match, Sport reports.

“Let’s see how he does overnight, how the symptoms evolve and we’ll see how he is and if he can play in the next game.”

Barca are now set to meet South American champions River Plate in Sunday’s final.
