Diego Simeone insisted Atletico Madrid would never stop working “in this vein” after Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.
Goals from Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann fired Atleti to joint-top of the table, level on points with Barcelona, but the Coach refused to get carried away after the game as he called for continued efforts from his side.
“We’ll continue in this vein,” he said.
“We’ll always work to our best, but our objective is to improve ourselves in every game.
“We don’t understand any other way than investing all our effort.
“We’ve been playing well and it’s good to win our final League game of the year at the Calderon.
“We weren’t precise [with our finishing] in the first half, but we were much closer to the performance needed to win the game [in the second].
“We embraced Raul Garcia in the dressing room. I wasn’t surprised by the good reception he received. He deserved it.
“[Saul Niguez] is a player for all occasions. For how hard he works, he’ll determine how far he goes [in the game].
“We knew it would be both a direct and difficult game, but we improved in the second half and deserved to win.”
