Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has admitted that “I don’t know why I’m not the same player I was at Tottenham Hotspur”.
The Welshman had struggled for fitness earlier in the season but has since scored in his last two appearances, including Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Getafe, and he revealed his frustration at failing to replicate the same consistency levels he showed in north London at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“I feel good. We played well as a team in the first half and scored four goals, and we ended with a victory,” he said after the game.
“I’m happy with my season so far. I’ve had some injuries, but now I’m back to my best and I feel good about my performances.
“[On his preferred position], any position, whether it be on the right, left or middle.
“I don’t know why I’m not the same player I was at Tottenham.
“[La Liga] is a different League to the Premier League. It’s a different style of football and perhaps that’s the reason.
“[My relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo] is very good, and I’ve heard many stories [about our relationship] which aren’t true.
“He’s one of the best players in the world. Is he the best? It depends on your opinion, but he’s a great, great player.”
