Abelardo: We deserved bigger win

Abelardo Fernandez hailed his Sporting Gijon players after Sunday’s 3-1 win against Las Palmas in La Liga but felt “we deserved even more goals”.

Antonio Sanabria’s hat-trick resoundingly ended the Asturians’ run of four successive defeats, but the Coach was a little disappointed his side were unable to make their dominance truly count, despite naturally being happy with the result.

“We deserved even more goals. We were a 10 at times,” he said after the game.

“[On the boos directed towards the returning Dani Ndi, who had been exiled until he signed a new contract in November], the fans are sovereign.

“Strikers live for goals, so the game was very good for Sanabria but also for the team.

“Apart from the points, this win is good for team morale after four consecutive defeats, more so as we have tough matches against Sevilla and Eibar coming up.

“[Our fans] are always with us and saw the effort of all the players.

“[On young centre-back Jorge Mere], he’s playing like he trains, which is always a 10.

“He’s always developing because we mustn’t forget he’s still a kid.”
