Sevilla bow out of CL

Sevilla’s Champions League participation is effectively over after they were beaten in Germany by Borussia Monchengladbach.

Los Rojiblancos had to beat their hosts and hope Juventus lost to Manchester City, but couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain, while the Old Lady were able to best the Premier League side as well.

Sevilla are now battling Gladbach for third and a place in the Europa League, but will need a result against Juventus if they’re to enter the competition they’ve won twice in a row after dropping to the bottom of Group D.

Lars Stindl opened the scoring for the home side just before the half-hour mark before Fabian Johnson made it two and Raffael added a third.

Vitolo gave Sevilla a ray of hope by pulling a goal back with eight minutes to play but Gladbach sealed the victory with Stindl’s second immediately after.

An Ever Banega penalty gave the score line some respectability but Unai Emery’s side are now vying with Gladbach to avoid finishing bottom of the group and exiting Europe altogether.
