Marcelino has spoken of his happiness and excitement at renewing his contract with Villarreal, signing an extension until 2019.
The new deal was confirmed on Friday, with the trainer appearing at an event to mark the agreement on Monday evening, accompanied by President Fernando Roig.
“It’s good continuity for Villarreal. I like Marcelino’s enthusiasm, his work, his desire to do things well, his belief in the project and the desire to take the team far,” Roig said, AS reports.
“He’s been here now for three-and-a-half seasons on to which we add three more. We do it because we believe in him and his way of working.”
Marcelino added that he is very happy with life at El Madrigal and appreciates the long-term contract offered by the Yellow Submarine.
“I want to offer my thanks for the opportunity to stay here at this great club,” he began.
“I had a clear idea of wanting to stay connected and the club wanted it too. They’ve offered me a three-year contract, which is very difficult in Spanish football.
“Now we know our strengths and weaknesses. I believe I can fulfil this contract. First we win on Sunday.
“We’re a big club and I’m very comfortable and it’s reciprocal. The time has gone quickly because on a personal and professional level there have been very good moments.
“So I am pleased and excited to continue in this great project. We’ll provide work, dedication, and enthusiasm for continuous improvement. And we’ll see where we get from here.
“I’d like to be able to at least continue in Europe and if we could approach the Champions League, that would be wonderful.”
Marcelino was asked about emulating the achievements of Manuel Pellegrini, who took Villarreal to the Champions League semi-finals, and backed away from the comparison while praising the current Manchester City manager.
“Pellegrini? We don’t concentrate on what others have done to do more. Manuel is an example and had extraordinary seasons of both football and achievement,” he noted.
“We have to feel Villarreal will achieve as much as it can.”
