Mata: Spain in generational change

Juan Mata believes that despite Spain’s ‘generational change’ La Roja can still defend their position as European champions at Euro 2016.

The Manchester United forward was put before the Press ahead of the visit of England to Jose Rico Perez in Alicante, and discussed next summer’s tournament,

“Being champions we’ll try to defend the trophy. We’re in a generational change, with young players, and there are other more established teams,” he admitted.

“But we have a competitive level high enough to win again.”

Mata was asked what he makes of the England side he will face on Friday and, in particular, club colleague Wayne Rooney, who is to miss the game.

“When I talk to Wayne every day in Manchester he’s pleased with the team, the youth, enthusiasm and the ability to do something important,” Mata revealed.

“Look, they won every game in the qualifiers. It’s a very tough test for us and for them to test their level. I consider them a rival for the Euros. They have a great squad and are very confident.”

Mata was also asked about Diego Costa, his Spain colleague who has struggled at the start of the season.

“He hasn’t had the best start but he won’t take long to score. It’s a matter of patience and time for the goals to return,” he predicted.

Mata concluded by answering a question on the future of Coach Vicente Del Bosque, who has suggested he will step down after the Euros.

“In my case, I made my debut with Vicente. All these years I’ve been coming here have been with him as Coach,” Mata pointed out.

“He’s brought a lot of success to our country and we’re very comfortable and happy with him. It’s not a decision that depends on us.”
