‘Hopefully we win all the poor games’

Nacho suggested Real Madrid’s win over Paris Saint-Germain was more important than the performance after scoring the winning goal.

The defender entered the match as a first half replacement for the injured Marcelo and scored very soon after coming on.

“I saw the ball going in the air and I could also see the goalkeeper. I saw that he had made a mistake but to be honest I didn’t want to put the ball there,” he revealed, AS reports.

“The only thing I saw was the goalkeeper. I didn’t know if there were any forwards [to cross to] or not. And with a bit of luck it’s gone in.

“At first I thought the ball was going wide but when it hit the grass I knew it was going in. The goal gives me confidence for these kinds of games.”

It was a game largely dominated by PSG but Nacho took heart from the defensive performance as Madrid recorded yet another clean sheet.

“We came out wanting to do well, as we do every game. They’ve had more possession but hopefully all the bad days end like this, with the team winning,” he said.

“PSG are one of the best in Europe. We kept another clean sheet and we continue working.”

Nacho was questioned about his role in Rafa Benitez’s side and the contribution of the younger, home-grown players.

“We’re the kids, as you say, and need to seize the opportunities we’re given,” he acknowledged.

“We work well through the week and the Coach is happy with us. We’ll continue to work so we keep getting chances.

“I prefer to play as a central defender. I’m also comfortable as a full-back and I’m ready for wherever the Coach needs me. I’ll work and if I can contribute like this, even better.

“In the end every player wants to face the best and tonight I was up against Angel Di Maria. It’s more difficult but it’s nicer.”
