‘Las Palmas need personality at Madrid’

Las Palmas Coach Quique Setien acknowledged the gargantuan task facing his side against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu, but still wants a good display.

Setien, a recent appointment to replace Paco Herrera, told his pre-match Press conference that Las Palmas will go to the capital looking to make life difficult for Los Blancos.

“You have to have personality at the Bernabeu. We want to control the ball, though it is clear that will be difficult,” he said.

“To go to a stadium like the Bernabeu is an event. It will be a difficult match, but we must face it like any other.

“Madrid are a team that don’t need to play well to win. They have the players sufficient to decide the game at any time. It will be difficult but we have seen this season that some opponents have put them in difficulty and had chances.

“But we are going to suffer, because they have a very high success rate. Madrid will try to settle the game as quickly as possible, since on Tuesday they have an important commitment [against Paris Saint-Germain] in the Champions League.

“I’ve considered making tactical changes but I don’t know if Rafa Benitez is concerned with how we’ll play. The squad is performing at a high level. There are players with minor discomfort, but overall it’s difficult to leave anyone out because they’re all enthusiastic.

“But no one can think they have a guaranteed position. It’s a luxury to coach players of this quality. We have players with experience in this type of scenario, but it’s logical that others have great enthusiasm to play.

“Madrid have players of a super class. Cristiano Ronaldo can score at any moment, Karim Benzema, a star, or James Rodriguez, a player I love that is coming back from injury, but we have to play to our strengths.”
