Cruyff diagnosed with lung cancer

Iconic former Barcelona player and Coach Johan Cruyff has reportedly been diagnosed with lung cancer.

AS cites reports from the Catalan media that say Cruyff received the diagnosis this week and will soon begin treatment.

The ex-Netherlands international is said to feel strong despite the illness and ready to start treatment.

Cruyff, 68, spent five years between 1973 and 1978 as a Barca player, and returned as trainer in 1988, remaining in place until 1996.

He won the League title in 1973-74 and the Copa del Rey in 1977-78, then coached Barca to four titles between 1990-91 and 1993-94, as well as the 1992 European Cup.

Cruyff is a three-time Ballon d’Or winner and also represented Ajax, his first club and the now-defunct Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomats in the NASL after leaving Barca.

He returned to Spain for a brief spell with Levante before heading back to Ajax and rounding out his playing days at Feyenoord.

Ajax became his first coaching role in 1984 before taking over the bench at Camp Nou.
