Sergio: Espanyol are broken

Sergio Gonzalez has admitted that Espanyol are “broken” following Saturday’s 2-1 home reverse to Sporting Gijon but is backing his side to bounce back.

Los Periquitos fell to their second straight defeat as Felipe Caicedo’s equaliser to cancel out Alen Halilovic’s opener was rendered obsolete by Alex Menendez’s winner for the new boys deep in injury time.

“The squad’s broken,” the Coach said after the game.

“The only ones who deserved to win the game in the last half-hour was us.

“Their [winning] goal came from a really isolated phase of play and we’re sad because of it.

“If we’re characterised by anything, it’s that we bounce back. We don’t seem to like staying in the same position in the table for too long.

“We’re concerned because we’re conceding goals too easily. We can only work to regain our fortress [at Cornella-El Prat].

“We’re not rock-solid defensively like we were last season.

“The squad’s going through a weak and fragile spell. We’re too sensitive, and the adversity’s affecting us a lot.

“We have to overcome this, and the sooner we do so the better. We’ll work hard during the international break.”
