‘Espanyol can’t stay on team bus’

Sergio Gonzalez has warned Espanyol that “we won't win without getting off the bus” ahead of Saturday's encounter with Sporting Gijon in La Liga.

Los Periquitos came under for their 3-0 defeat to Deportivo La Coruna, and the Coach feels the criticism was warranted as he demanded an improvement from his players for the visit of the new boys

“We won't win without getting off the bus,” he said at a Press conference.

“It'll be very difficult [against Sporting] and anyone who thinks it will be a formality is totally wrong.

“Communication between our centre-backs must improve a lot, but we're more comfortable when defending with two lines of four.

“We're more balanced [now than we were at the start of the season] and we know we can avoid conceding so many goals.

“The experienced heads have shown me that they'll take a step forward and drag the rest along with them.

“I wasn't entirely happy with how [Felipe Caicedo, Gerard Moreno and Marco Asensio] played against Deportivo, but I won't rule out playing them together again.

“You should always do [what your instincts tell you]. I don't need anyone to tell me [what to do].

“I always look for things which aren't working in the team and take my share of the blame for what isn't working.

“I have great respect [for Sporting boss Abelardo Fernandez]. He's closely identified with the club.

“No-one thought they'd go up last season. They're a well-drilled team with clear ideas.”
