‘Espanyol have their identity back’

Sergio Gonzalez believes Espanyol are over the 6-0 home hammering to Real Madrid after seeing off Valencia in front of their own fans.

Victor Alvarez’s goal delivered the points and the Coach said after the match that getting the rout out of their system was crucial, particularly for goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

“I don’t know if this was the best game, but it was a great game. We denied their chances and we were strong in every facet. The team has regained its identity,” said Sergio, AS reports.

“I’m very happy on a personal level for Pau’s game. We never had any doubts but maybe the feelings are different now. Hopefully this is a turning point for him.

“The players competed like animals and the fans enjoyed the game with them.”

Sergio also touched on the contribution of Marco Asensio, the Madrid loan player who starred against Los Che.

“What was missing was adapting to his teammates and to the city, but luckily everything has gone perfectly,” he said of the youngster.

“We know that he is a top player.”
