‘It was Madrid’s day’

Cristiano Ronaldo commended Shakhtar Donetsk’s performance in their Champions League trip to Real Madrid but praised his team’s consistency.

Ronaldo scored three of Madrid’s four against the Ukrainians, Karim Benzema getting the game’s other goal and, despite the score line, Shakhtar made a good impression at Santiago Bernabeu.

“We’re in good form. We have to highlight the work of the team. We’re consistent in defence, and we worked well,” Ronaldo said after the match, AS reports.

“Shakhtar played well, they like to have possession, but today was the day for Madrid to play well and win.”

It was pointed out to Ronaldo that Madrid didn’t start that well under Rafa Benitez, including some mixed pre-season results, but the forward dismissed the summer.

“We know pre-season isn’t as important, and we knew we had to start well in the League and the Champions League,” he continued.

“The League started a little badly with a draw but we’ve been good since then, more consistent and we’re in a good phase.”
