‘Pique’s commitment speaks for itself’

Juan Mata has defended Gerard Pique from his Spain critics, arguing that the Barcelona defender’s commitment to La Roja can’t be denied.

Mata helped La Roja to a 1-0 win over Macedonia on Tuesday, his cross turned in by the goalkeeper, to keep Spain on course for Euro 2016.

“I’m happy to return to the team and contribute, to score a goal that gives us three points that take us a step closer, and for having been in Oviedo, my city [for Saturday’s win over Slovakia,” he said, AS reports.

“It would have been nice to play there but I understand there are 23 players and it’s a difficult decision. I was happy to be there. I went to see my grandmother in what little free time we had.

“It was a treat to see people in my family I don’t see often as they can’t travel to Manchester.”

Mata added that now he’s playing regularly for Manchester United he feels content, before moving on to former United man Pique.

“I think I’ve made a good start to the season. I feel good and I’m getting a lot of minutes,” he acknowledged.

“I’m starting to feel comfortable [on the right wing]. In recent years I’ve been more of a playmaker, on the left or a second striker, but I think playing on the right, being left-footed, means I can score goals coming inside or playing passes.

“It’s better when you can play several positions and you’re not limited to one. Depending on the system of the Coach you can play in several places, and I feel comfortable in all of them.

“Pique and I have been together in many youth levels and I think his commitment speaks for itself. It’s something that’s not up for discussion.

“It’s not good for the group. Things are going well with the same base that had success and the whistlers should know that these things are negative for the group.

“Gerard was focused [against Slovakia] and did well. It’s what you have to do. We have to put these issues behind us and keep pulling in the same direction.”
