‘I’ll play anywhere for Madrid’

Denis Cheryshev has insisted that, although he is experiencing “an unpleasant situation”, he will play anywhere for Real Madrid.

The Russia international was heavily linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu throughout the summer, having spent the past two seasons on loan at Sevilla and Villarreal, but ultimately stayed put, amid reports of a €200m release clause.

Nonetheless, he has now set his sights on establishing himself under Rafa Benitez, despite the Coach omitting him from Los Blancos' first two La Liga matches of the season without explanation and Cristiano Ronaldo playing in his default position on the left wing.

“There were clubs that were interested in talking about my situation, but there were no concrete proposals,” he told Sport Express.

“Of course interest existed and there was the possibility of leaving on loan, but the club were not willing to part with me and wanted to keep me.

“I'm a Real Madrid player and I respect the club's decision. I want to play for this team. It's a life-long dream of mine.

“It's true that I have a release clause of €200m. Why's it so high? It's a question you'll have to ask the club.

“Madrid probably don't want me to sign for another team, but I'm comfortable here and I have my head down.

“Benitez hasn't explained to me why he didn't pick me in the first two [League] games, but I hope the Coach begins rotating the team.

“It's an unpleasant situation, but I'm still a football player. I'll continue working hard to catch the train and earn minutes. I won't relax because if I relax then I won't get my way.

“I think the Coach sees me in midfield, on the left. We haven't spoken about playing at full-back.

“There are players in this position such as [Alvaro] Arbeloa and Nacho, but if there was a great need, I'd have no problem playing there.

“I see myself more in attacking positions though as I'm more comfortable there.

“I'm aware that Cristiano [Ronaldo] plays in my position, but it doesn't frighten me.

“When I have the opportunity I'll try to take it. I don't fear anyone. He's one of the best players in the world and I'm trying to from what he does on the pitch.

“I won't copy him, but I'll try to learn a few things from him. I'll do what I already know, but better. I won't start doing his tricks because only he can do them.

“Despite not playing, you must be prepared to do so. It's necessary to compensate for the lack of games by ensuring you're always ready.”
