Masche ‘couldn’t handle Messi’s life’

Javier Mascherano has spoken of the strain on Argentina and Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. ‘I couldn’t do it…’

The pair are with their national team in the United States, preparing for a game against Bolivia, with Mexico coming later in the international window.

“Messi never hides and always faces his critics. I would hate to be him. I couldn't handle it. He’s very special. He still comes to the national team even when he’s about to become a father,” Marca quotes Mascherano as telling TyCSports.

Mascherano added that the reaction to the Argentina squad for failing to win the Copa America was out of proportion.

“We’re players who want to give what we can. We’ve not committed a crime we need to hide for. We’re honest and we try to do our best,” he continued.

“Losing the Copa America hurt more than losing the World Cup. It hurt a lot.”
