Casillas ‘needed to breathe’

Iker Casillas has spoken about his departure from Real Madrid, citing a ‘need to breathe’ as the reason he left for Porto.

Casillas called time on his Madrid career over the summer, moving to Portugal on a free transfer, and at a publicity event on Monday, explained how he felt at the time.

“It was a difficult change but it’s an experience and I needed the feelings of excitement inside me,” Marca quotes the goalkeeper as saying.

“The situation wasn’t the best. I was always the focus of attention, both good and bad, and I needed to breathe. I’m happy now and I think it shows on my face.

“The love Porto have given me since I arrived has been exquisite. It’s a demanding club and it’s been two years without trophies. It won’t be easy to meet our objectives because this is a young team.

“The goal is the League, the Cup and the League Cup. The Champions League is another great challenge, a beautiful competition. Let’s see if we can play Madrid in the final in San Siro!

“I see Madrid doing very well. They’ve strengthened well, have great players and despite drawing in Gijon I’m sure everything will be fine. There’s time to make up those two points.”
