‘Sporting will mix work with play’

Abelardo Fernandez says Sporting Gijon will mix “enjoyment” with “competition” this season after Sunday's credible 0-0 draw with Real Madrid.

The new boys gained many admirers for their fearless display against Los Blancos in their first match back in La Liga, and the Coach felt his side were full value for their point.

“I put two verbs to my squad at the beginning of the season. They were 'enjoy' and 'compete', but you can't enjoy yourself without competing,” the former Barcelona defender said after the game.

“The draw was fair and a draw with Madrid is a success. [Our performance] was a continuation of last season, with intensity, and we tried to stop our opponents from playing.

"They could have scored, but we also had two clear-cut chances through [Antonio] Sanabria and [Carlos] Carmona. The fans were great.

“It was my La Liga coaching debut so I was nervous, and more so against a Coach of reference.”
