Kovacic credits Modric & Ronaldo

Mateo Kovacic spoke of the importance of Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo in convincing him to join Real Madrid.

The Croatia international was this week confirmed as Los Blancos’ latest summer signing, leaving Inter for a fee reported to be in the region of €30m, taking the No 16 shirt that did belong to Lucas Silva.

“I appreciate all the support and the support the club has given me. I’m at the biggest club in the world and I expect a lot from myself and the team,” he said at his presentation, AS reports.

“Luka has done a lot to get me here. I don’t have to talk about his characteristics as everyone can see them. He’s a great player. I thank him for speaking well of me and I’m happy at sharing a dressing room with him.

“It’s not up to me to decide my position, but the Coach. I feel best as defensive midfielder. That’s where I’m most comfortable but it’s the Coach’s decision.

“I’ve spoken briefly to [Rafa Benitez]. He welcomed me. I know him from Napoli and I’m happy to work under a Coach of his prestige.

“I want to thank Inter for their assistance in this process. Madrid is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s the biggest club in the world. I’m young and I want to learn.

“All the players here are great but the greatest is Cristiano. It’s a great honour to play in this team with players who have experienced it all.

“I knew of Madrid’s interest three or four days ago. Everything happened very quickly.

“I don’t feel bad for leaving Inter. I’ve signed for Madrid, the opportunity of a lifetime and I wasn’t going to get more chances like this.

“I don’t need to think about the money. I’m here to play football and show what I can do. I know there is pressure but that’s football. My teammates will help me.

“Why not Barcelona? Madrid are the biggest club in the world. I was certain, no doubts. I’ll say it again, I’m very happy.”
