Messi: Pedro deserves everything

Lionel Messi has offered his support to Pedro Rodriguez, scorer of the winning UEFA Super Cup goal, as he gets set to leave Barcelona.

Pedro, reportedly bound for Manchester United came off the bench to net the ninth goal of a 5-4 win over Sevilla and Messi, scorer of a brace of free kicks, spoke to the Press after the epic encounter.

“He deserves it for all he has given and continues to give to the club,” Messi said of Pedro, AS reports.

“I don’t know what will happen with him, it’s a decision he has to make himself, but whatever happens he will deserve it.”

On the match itself, Messi spoke of the game as important in the context of the new season, as Barca chase a sextuple.

“We started very well, taking an important lead. Then we relaxed and made complicated a game we had practically won,” he said after Sevilla went from 4-1 down to drawing 4-4.

“We did everything to keep the game controlled but we relaxed and ended up suffering in a game we had practically decided.

“We came back from their goal and then we did everything. We had the ball and scored the goals.

“The important thing was to start well by winning the Super Cup and now we go for another trophy against Athletic Bilbao [the Supercopa de Espana]. It costs a lot and we know it’s important.

“We go for the sextuple step by step. First we think about Bilbao, and then the League.”
