‘Messi is almost a guarantee’

Andres Iniesta believes having Lionel Messi almost guarantees success for Barcelona but warns against UEFA Super Cup complacency.

Barca meet Sevilla in Georgia on Tuesday as the Champions League and Europa League winners duke it out, Barca looking for the fourth leg of a potential sextuple.

“When you win the treble you think about what else you could possibly win,” Iniesta admitted at a Press conference, AS reports.

“We know it won’t be easy. We can lay the first stone. We know the opponent well and they have a great Coach.

“You have to go into the game knowing it will be difficult. We’re very excited to go for six trophies, but we’re thinking about [the UEFA Super Cup].

“Last season went from bad to good, as it will do whenever there are changes at the technical level, but we got to the end of the season in very good shape. The success was total.

“It’s difficult to compare years and players. We always have the same idea. I don’t have good memories of [the 2006 UEFA Super Cup, won by Sevilla]. Sevilla were worthy champions.

“It seems like people think we’re going to win these trophies without doing anything and that isn’t the right way to think.

“Having Messi on your team is almost a sure-fire guarantee. I hope he continues in the new season on the line we’re used to.”
