Jimenez heading for Benfica

Raul Jimenez is expected to leave Atletico Madrid for Benfica shortly, needing only to successfully complete a medical before the move is confirmed.

Jimenez has travelled to Lisbon to complete the formalities of the transfer and AS report Benfica will take half of Jimenez’s registration for €3m.

The Mexico international had appeared bound for West Ham, only to fail to turn up for a medical, claiming he missed his flight to London after he overslept.

AS suggest, however, that the Hammers’ early exit from the Europa League made them a less attractive option to Jimenez’s agent, Jorge Mendes.

Mendes had already started talks with Benfica over Jimenez and needed the agreement with the Premier League club to expire, which it now has, clearing the way for a move to Portugal.
