Former Real Madrid forward Jorge Valdano is ‘embarrassed’ that Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has been criticised for his Argentina performances.
Messi was targeted as Tata Martino’s side failed to win the Copa America, losing in the final to Chile, and the national team Coach has also come to the captain’s defence.
“I’m embarrassed by the criticism. We’re talking about the best player in the world, one of the best ever,” Valdano said, Marca reports.
“Everywhere else in the world they enjoy Messi, but we criticise him. I’m one of the people who can’t understand the criticism of Messi, can’t understand that people are critical of Messi.
“I hope Messi doesn’t get bored or weary, and that this doesn’t produce a terminal argument.”
