Casilla ready to seize Madrid chance

Kiko Casilla has underlined his desire to become Real Madrid No 1 following his move from Espanyol earlier this week.

The 28-year-old returned to the Santiago Bernabeu for a reported €6m and is expected to challenge Keylor Navas for goalkeeping duties next season in light of Iker Casillas’ departure to Porto.

“I feel butterflies in my stomach, want to be with my teammates, get to know the coaching staff and start training,” he told Madrid’s official website.

“I left a few years ago and returned home, which is always great. I arrived here when I was 14 and didn’t imagine coming back to Real Madrid.

“Life sometimes throws you gifts that you can’t afford to miss, and this was a gift I needed.

“Adolescence impacts deeply on the life of a person and I spent all mine here. Part of my personality and character was instilled here and I’m very happy to be back.

“I’m aware that what is happening to me has happened to only a few people. I’m privileged to join Real Madrid and return to my first club.

“I have an opportunity ahead of me that I want to make the most of and, above all, fight for this club.

“I didn’t want to miss this opportunity. I wanted the transfer to go through as quickly as possible and Espanyol to sanction my departure.

“In the end, I realised my dream and behaved very well. When you know your train is due to arrive, you don’t want to miss it.

“I felt it to be the case when the opportunity of going back home to Madrid arose, and that’s what happened.

“I try, above all, to stay calm. If a goalkeeper exudes tranquillity, that’s much of the work done. I also like to help the defence with my passing game.

“I’ve gained experience, especially over the past four years. I’ve played regularly in La Liga and every game is a test.

“You can tell that I’ve played 100-odd games and I’m not the kid I was before.

“My objectives are to be the team’s No 1, help in any way I can on the pitch, form a good bond with my teammates and try to play as much as possible.

“I’ve come to play against Real Madrid fans [in recent seasons], but they’ve always treated me very well, with respect.

“Now that I’m back home, I’m going to give my best for this club and I hope they’ll support me.

“First and foremost, I’d like to avoid any injuries, which is important for an athlete, then win a trophy with Real Madrid.

“I would be thrilled and hope to win many [trophies]. Also, I hope to play as much as I can.”
